4 Ways to Achieve Plump and Full Lips

back
Lip Filler for plump and juicy lips

Thicc is in, and it has been in for a while — from Angelina Jolie to the Kardashians, the trend has shown that there’s something alluring about having plump, juicy lips. Lip plumping is now highly raved among us women. Recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reveal that 27,000 lip augmentation procedures were performed in 2000. To put that number in context, a lip augmentation procedure was performed nearly every 20 minutes. [1]

The popularity of fuller, supple lips has increased in popularity over the years and women have found a variety of ways to transform their lips and achieve the perfect pout.

It had reached its [unhealthy] peak in 2019 when women started the “swollen lip challenge”, where one would try getting plump lips by applying glue or the “Kylie Jenner lip challenge” by sucking in air while keeping their lips through a small jar. These, of course, came with their own sets of complications and dangerous side effects, like trauma to the lips.

Not everyone wants to have lip fillers — but people shouldn’t have to go through extreme measures to get plump lips too. Read on for more tips and lip filler alternatives to get the perfect pout.

Lip prep: Exfoliation and Hydration

This is the first step, and the most important step to beautiful lips. Before attempting any other beauty hack, exfoliation helps give your lips a pink healthy glow. Flaky lips look dull, and a dry pucker can make your lips look smaller and thinner than they look. Brush your lips lightly with a clean toothbrush, which can also help with circulation. You can also consider a lip scrub to help with the exfoliation.

When your body is dehydrated, your lips will shrivel up and tend to peel - making it look small and thin. Drink lots of water for a luscious lip, and at the same time, this keeps the rest of your body and skin hydrated as well.

Fake it till you make it

Now that you’ve set the right foundation for the road to beautiful, fuller lips, make-up can help accentuate your lips and make them look fuller. There are a variety of beauty hacks that can help with giving you that full lip, but not without that extra effort:

  • Highlight your lips with gloss to help draw attention to them. Grab a clear lip gloss, or one that matches your lipstick, and apply a dab of gloss in the middle of your lips. When it picks up light, it’ll give your lips a fuller look.
  • Create layers of nude lip colours by applying one shade all over your lips and top it with a slightly lighter colour in the middle of that extra dimension. This will even help with making your lips look more even.
  • Add a powder contour on a small fluffy brush and run it under your bottom lip after you’re done with your lip products. This helps cast a slight shadow under your lips for that added oomph.
  • A plumping lip gloss could also be applied to give you temporary fuller-looking lips.

Turn to natural solutions for lip plumping

On top of that, you can also consider other forms of methods to achieve fuller lips, such as essential oils.

In fact, some of your makeup products use these ingredients as well! Essential oils like cinnamon and peppermint are effective as they can mildly stimulate the lips and blood boost circulation for a plumping effect. You may try adding it into a clear lip gloss of your choice for a quick fix. As it may cause contact dermatitis, it’s always important to do a spot test on your arm before putting it on your lips.

Some beauty experts also turn to gua sha, an alternative form of therapy that involves scraping the skin with a massage tool to improve circulation [2] and encourage lymphatic drainage and sculpt the face. Using your gua sha stone on your lips may help with plumping too. Use your stone with a ribbed side, and move it up and down quickly along the outer edges to cause friction for a plump appearance on your lips. Be careful not to overdo it to prevent bruising.

Fotona LipLase Laser Lip Plumping

Fotona LipLase Laser Lip Plumping is a non-invasive, needless treatment provides you with the volume and fullness.

How does Fotona Lip Plumping work?

This technology uses optical energy delivered in pulses to the surface tissue to stimulate new collagen production, improve elasticity and texture. For deeper collagen stimulation, the treatment is also done intra-orally on the inside of the lips to reach the deeper underlying skin tissues and to promote collagen production.

Two 4D lasers heat the deeper layers of the skin at temperatures of 42 - 45°C and optical energy is transmitted in single sub-second long pulses, there is no build-up of heat and no damage will be done to the skin. Patients may experience slight sensations of warmth, but the procedure is painless. However, upon request, numbing cream can be applied prior.

Generally, each session lasts about 15 minutes and results are visible immediately after the first session. Ideally, we recommend at least 6 sessions, with the first 3 sessions spaced 2 weeks apart. Results can last up to a year.

What are the effects of lip plumping?
  • Hydrates and plumps the lips
  • Stimulates collagen production
  • Lightens smoker’s lips and natural lip colour to a more pinkish tone
  • Smoothens wrinkles around the mouth
  • Defines the cupid’s bow
  • Volumises the lips
  • Produces natural-looking results
  • No needles, downtime, or bruising
  • Produces visible results after the first session
Are there any side effects of lip plumping?

Immediately after the treatment, you may experience some swelling that will resolve after a few hours. You may also experience superficial peeling on the 2nd and 3rd day.

As for aftercare, you’re advised to use SPF 50 lip balm or a skin moisturiser. Lipstick should be avoided for the next 24 hours after the treatment. Strenuous physical activity, spicy food and extremely hot liquids should also be avoided.

Summary

Not everyone likes the idea of getting injectable fillers, but applying lip plumpers every day may be a hassle. Whether it’s a quick fix or a lip filler treatment, it is always important to take care of your skin (lips included!) and avoid fads that may hurt or cause damage to your lips. Worry not, as there are much safer alternatives to getting the perfect pout.
