Alternating between heat and cold exposure, commonly referred to as contrast therapy, has gained attention in recent wellness discussions. From saunas and steam rooms to cold plunges and ice baths, many individuals explore these experiences for relaxation, recovery, and stress relief.
In a recent CNA Lifestyle feature by journalist Khoo Bee Khim, Dr Shirley Kwee from Cambridge Medical Group shared that heat and cold exposure may trigger different responses within the nervous system and circulation.
According to Dr Shirley, heat exposure may encourage the body to relax by promoting vasodilation, where blood vessels widen and increase circulation to the skin. This may contribute to the warm and calming sensation many people experience after heat-based therapies.
Cold exposure, on the other hand, may briefly stimulate alertness and trigger a temporary “fight or flight” response as the body adapts to sudden temperature changes.
As Dr Shirley explained in the feature:
“Heat can promote relaxation, while cold exposure may trigger a short burst of alertness before the body gradually settles again.”
She also noted that individual responses may differ depending on a person’s overall health, skin sensitivity, and tolerance to temperature extremes.
While many individuals enjoy contrast therapy as part of a wellness routine, Dr Shirley highlighted that not every trend is suitable for everyone, especially for those with sensitive or reactive skin conditions.
Excessive heat exposure may make redness and flushing more noticeable, particularly in individuals prone to rosacea or skin sensitivity. Combined with aggressive skincare practices such as over-exfoliation, repeated heat and steam exposure may also affect the skin barrier and increase irritation.
Dr Shirley further shared:
“It is important to listen to your body and understand how your skin responds, rather than assuming more exposure always means better outcomes.”
For individuals exploring wellness practices involving heat or cold exposure, moderation and awareness remain important. Maintaining a gentle skincare routine, staying hydrated, and avoiding excessive exfoliation may help support overall skin comfort and balance.
