A Guide to Fine Lines and Wrinkle Reduction

back
fine line wrinkles

As we grow older, we might observe the development of either fine lines or wrinkles on our skin. This might be alarming to us but it is a normal process as we age. By using our muscles and repeating the same movements every day, our skin remembers these movements by creating either fine lines, wrinkles or both. In 2020, the global anti-ageing market was estimated to be worth about 58.5 billion U.S. dollars. While wrinkle reduction may be difficult, plenty of anti-ageing solutions are abound - only if you look in the right place.

You may have tried anti-ageing creams and all sorts of masks to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles but they do not necessarily yield lasting or significant results. In this article, we will cover some aesthetic treatments we offer that could give you the solution to some of your skin frustrations.

However, it is important to first understand what these terms mean and how they come about developing on our skin. A lot of the time, we use the terms โ€œfine linesโ€ and โ€œwrinklesโ€ as interchangeable terms but although related, they refer to different signs of ageing on our skin. Which begs the question, what are fine lines and wrinkles?

What are Fine Lines?

Fine lines are small and shallow creases that form on thin, delicate skin. They form when we repeat movements such as smiling, squinting, laughing and frowning. These lines can be spotted around our eyes and mouths where the skin is thinnest.

Fine lines are not deep and are usually less than two millimetres in depth. They are associated with the earliest signs of ageing and as we age, they can develop into deeper folds and wrinkles.

Some causes of fine lines are:

  • Side-sleeping
  • Sun exposure
  • Genetics
  • Repetitive movements
  • Ageing
  • Fair skin
  • Dry skin
  • Smoking
  • Loss of collagen and elastin

If fine lines are not addressed, they will deepen and develop into wrinkles.

What are Wrinkles?

Wrinkles can be formed on any part of your body such as your face, neck, chest, hands, knees and elbows as they are mostly caused by muscle contractions under the skin. [1]

With age, our muscle contractions can cause the skin to shift out of its natural position which results in a wrinkle or crease. Even the smoothest parts of your skin can develop wrinkles.

Wrinkles are folds that are more than two millimetres deep and can be categorised as either a dynamic wrinkle or a static wrinkle.

Dynamic wrinkles only show up when you are doing something repetitive such as smiling and disappear when you relax while a static wrinkle stays even when the skin and muscles are relaxed so even if youโ€™re not smiling, static wrinkles can still be seen on the skin.

However, dynamic wrinkles can develop into static wrinkles but luckily there are treatments for wrinkles and fine lines with Cambridge Medicalโ€™s Doublo Gold HIFU treatment and Wrinkle Reduction treatment which we will introduce you to shortly.

Doublo Gold HIFU Treatment for Wrinkle Reduction

A non-invasive and non-surgical treatment, the Doublo Gold HIFU treatment we offer at Cambridge Medical is a quick and effective treatment that you can go for during lunch. This treatment will be able to deliver a noticeable improvement to sagging skin and even to a double chin, putting elasticity back into the skin. [2]

Using a highly-researched and trusted handheld device, the treatment makes use of ultrasonic energy to improve skin laxity in the face and neck. It is a treatment highly popular and pioneered in South Korea but developed further into the Doublo Gold treatment we are offering.

The HIFU (also known as High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) will help to tighten the skin through heat energy to stimulate the regeneration of collagen and elastin โ€“ perfect for any fine lines and wrinkles you might have.

Benefits of the Doublo Gold HIFU treatment:

  • Skin tightening and rejuvenation
  • Non-surgical and non-invasive face lift
  • Double chin reduction
  • Alleviation of neck wrinkles
  • Eyebrow lift
  • Pore size reduction
  • Nasolabial fold reduction
  • Jowl lift

The treatment is administered through a handheld device with three different cartridges that can reach three different levels of depth in the skin. They can be used as a combination and the different cartridges will help with different results.

The three different cartridges are:

  • 1.5mm โ€“ This size will be able to improve the pore size and skin tone through the targeting of the upper dermis using a wound-healing effect. This helps to boost collagen and rebuild the skinโ€™s fibroblast.
  • 3.0mm โ€“ This reaches the subcutaneous fat layer (almost before the muscle layer) and the derma layer to increase collagen production and elasticity.
  • 4.5mm โ€“ This helps to reach the deepest layer, the SMAS (found just before the muscle layer) and uses thermal energy to tighten the skin and give it a lifting effect to minimise wrinkles.

There is no downtime, with the entire session only lasting eight to ten minutes. It is recommended to go for one to two sessions with a follow-up session four to six months after although some might feel that the initial session is already enough.

Wrinkle Reduction Treatment

Another treatment we offer is the Wrinkle Reduction treatment. This treatment is injected into the muscles by the doctor to help in the reducing and smoothening of forehead lines, frown lines, crowโ€™s feet and wrinkles on the face.

Some people find the idea of neurotoxins a little scary, but they actually help to block the release of a chemical transmitter called Acetylcholine from nerve endings.

After being injected into the muscles, they become relaxed and the appearance of wrinkles by extension becomes reduced. However, something to note about this treatment is that it will only work for dynamic wrinkles and not static wrinkles.

Treatment for static wrinkles will instead include Dermal Fillers coupled with neurotoxins and PFHL Skin Hydrator to reduce their appearance.

The areas that this treatment can target are:

  • Forehead lines
  • Glabellar frown lines
  • Overhanging eyebrows
  • Bunny lines
  • Crowโ€™s feet
  • Nose tilt and flare
  • Lip lines
  • Pores
  • Nasolabial fold
  • Popply chin

No matter which treatment you end up going for, it is important to note that these treatments above are not invasive and there is no downtime required for either of them. They are treatments you can opt for diminishing your wrinkles and fine lines as well as treating your skin from within for lasting results.
